IN CONVERSATION / LEARNING WHILE LEADING

Making friends with maths and calculus again.

I joined colleagues in this Queen Mary University of London staff-apprenticeship film to encourage others to take on new learning. QMUL’s HR apprenticeship team supported and funded my MSc in AI and Data Science at Northeastern University London while I was leading the Business Analysis team.

For me, returning to study meant revisiting subjects I had feared at school: advanced mathematics, linear algebra, calculus and statistics. With practice and a reason to use them, those old adversaries began to feel like old friends. The opportunity was bigger than a qualification: I started finding use cases and bringing my learning into the team’s work. We still occasionally disagree over the homework.

Read more · From mathematical confidence to practical AI

That foundation opened a route into backpropagation and machine learning. Across the wider MSc, I explored neural networks, optimisation, statistical inference, natural language processing, clustering and model evaluation. These topics became ways to ask better questions about a service, choose an appropriate method and examine whether the result deserved confidence.

AI brings several disciplines into conversation.

Mathematics and statistics provide much of the foundation: linear algebra represents data and transformations; calculus supplies the derivatives used in backpropagation; probability helps us reason about uncertainty. Physics contributed energy-based ideas: Hopfield networks and Boltzmann machines draw on models of interacting systems and statistical physics. Neuroscience inspired aspects of artificial neural networks, while information theory supplies measures such as entropy. These are productive connections, not a claim that an artificial network reproduces a human brain.

For further reading, see Goodfellow, Bengio and Courville’s Deep Learning and the Nobel Prize’s explanation of the physics behind Hopfield and Hinton’s work.

The connection to leadership mattered most: sharing ideas, helping colleagues build confidence, and translating technical learning into analysis people could use. The Business Analysis Capability story and applied portfolio show how that developed, with each case identifying its data and delivery stage.

This is my retrospective reflection on the interview and wider course, rather than a transcript or a list of topics all discussed in the film.

Learning became a way of working.

The modules connect mathematical and technical craft with stakeholder discovery, social context and communication. I used that foundation to develop applied investigations and a structured AI and data learning pathway for colleagues.

The team pathway was a separate six-course, role-aware programme I designed for an internal change-delivery audience. It combined shared vocabulary, practical discussion and optional technical depth. Planned protected learning time and showcases were part of the adoption model; this page does not imply that every colleague finished the pathway. Explore the BA Capability and its milestones ↗

How to read the portfolio

Each module links to a concise reflection distilled from my source document, then shows selected applied studies. Some studies analysed real but restricted workplace records; one programming study used published aggregate data. Others used curated synthetic examples, public teaching benchmarks or literature. A proposal is not a deployed system, and a synthetic result is not measured workplace impact.

Code and questions: Python code and notebooks for selected studies are privately stored and maintained by me. I’m happy to answer questions about the methods, safeguards and findings.

Publication boundary: No raw submissions, individual records, private teaching pages or internal data files are included. This page is designed for new course and project summaries to be added over time.

60 TOPICS / EIGHT TAUGHT COURSES

From a syllabus to better questions.

My learning catalogue connects technical study with the judgments needed in practice: how to prepare data, challenge a model, explain a finding and support adoption. These are learning reflections, not 60 separate qualifications or claims of production deployment. The capstone brings the strands together as the ninth module.
